Origin of Benabent

Last name originally from Catalonia. In the province of Lleida there are two towns called Benavent, whose name must be related to that of the lineage. At least the Benavents were Lords of those towns, according to Pedro Vitales.

This surname is different from the Castilian Benavente lineage originating from the city of its name and province of Zamora.

Mossén Jaime Febrer quotes in his Trovas: A windmill on gold, blue door and windows, and red blades, were the motto of Pere (Pedro) Benavent, who came to serve the king from Vega de Carlades ( region of Alvérnia, Lenguadoc, France, which belonged to the crown of Aragon). For his courage, King Jaime I made him a captain, and gave him a house and land in Ayora, so that he could settle there and observe the movements of the Moors. He was vigilant and firm in the constancy of his determinations, and so he died fighting, making the trunk of an oak shelter for him. He left successors who spread his surname throughout the Valencian kingdom.

In Aragon they had solar houses in Alfocea, their owner Martín de Venabent; in Zuera, its owners Domingo Benavent, Mossén Miguel Benabent and Pascual de Benabent; in Velilla de Ebro, its owner Johan de Benabent; in Alforque, its owner Johan de Benabent; in Chiprana, its owner Mossén Ferrando Venabent; in the city of Zaragoza, its owners Miguel Venabent and Johan de Venabent; in Tarazona, and in Marran (all in Zaragoza), its owner Pedro Benavent, and in Alcañiz (Teruel), its owner Joan de Venavent, documented in the Aragonese Fogueración of 1495; in the city of Huesca, being neighbors of it Arnalt and Bonanat de Benavent, in 1283, and in the city of Teruel, being a neighbor of it Alfonso Benavent, in 1384.

The conquerors of Cuatretonda and Luchente (València) came from an Aragonese branch, who founded a patronage and benefit in the chapel of the Metropolitan Church of the city of Valencia, its founder being Francisco Benavent. From him descended Joseph and Miguel Benavent who made information of nobility in 1631 and 1637, respectively.

Antonio Benavent, a native of Montroig (Tarragona), Captain and Commissioner of the Royal Armies, obtained the privilege of Honorable Citizen of Barcelona on January 30, 1671.

Francesc de Benavent, bourgeois of Alcoy (Alicante), obtained military privilege in Monzón on June 30, 1528.

N. Benavent, a native of Pallars (Lleida), was a resident of Xàtiva (Valencia) in 1421.
