Origin of Queralt

This illustrious and noble lineage is very old in Catalonia. Some author says that its primitive origin was in the Ampurdán region of Girona, but, without a doubt, it comes from the town of Santa Coloma de Queralt (whose second name they took as their last name), belonging to the province of Tarragona. We will refer to a synthetic genealogy of the Queralt solar house, in said town, later on. Another house of this lineage settled in Pobla de Sales (Urgell), in the province of Lleida, and in its parish church it had its own chapel, that of Santa Catalina.

In Catalonia, he had solar houses in Vilafranca del Penedès, his owners Monserrat Queralt and Pere Queralt Parayre; in San Celoní (both in Barcelona), its owner N. Queralt; in Balaguer, its owner Jaume Queralt; in Aramunt, its owner Joan Queralt; in Galliner, Montesquiu and Puig del Anell, its owner Perot Queralt; in Pobla de Segur, its owner M° Grau de Queralt; in Gerri de la Sal, its owner Augeli Queralt; in Altrón, its owners Joan Queralt and Ramón Queralt; in Sauri, its owner Joan Queralt; in Llesuy and La Torre, its owner Mateu Queralt; in Valencia de Aneu, its owner Jaume Queralt; in Seo de Urgel, its owner M° Gaspar de Queralt; in Lleida, its owner Mossén Antoni Queralt; in Borjas Blancas, its owner Ramón Queralt; in Albagés (all in Lleida), its owners Bernat Queralt, Joan Queralt and Miguel Queralt; in Ulldecona, its owners Bertomeu Queralt, Matheu Queralt and Mossén Jaume Queralt; in Alcanar (both in Tarragona), their owners Joan Queralt and Pere Queralt; and in Tarragona, its owner Joan Queralt, documented in the Catalan Fogueración of 1553; in Cabrera de Mar (Barcelona), cited in the 16th century; and in Sant Feliú de Guixols (Girona).

The antiquity of the Catalan Queralt is proven by the outstanding intervention of some of their knights in the conquest of the Kingdom of Valencia at the service of the Aragonese King Jaime I, as well as the dates on which they wore the Habit of the Order of Saint John, in the Grand Priory of Catalonia.

Arnaldo Queralt was in that Order Commander of Alguayre and Cervera-Ametlla, in 1289; from Espluga de Francolí in 1284-1290, and from Villafranca del Penedès in 1295. Inés Queralt, who died on October 27, 1310, was Prioress.

Felipe Queralt Cardona Requesens y Rocabertí proved his nobility to enter the Order of Saint John in the Great Priory of Catalonia, in 1548.

This lineage also has a lot of antiquity in the kingdoms of Valencia and Murcia, where they were taken by the Catalan knights who served King Jaime I of Aragon in their conquest. The author of the "Historia Murgitana" makes a brief compendium of the nobles and soldiers of account who accompanied said King on the journey he made from Elche for the conquest of Orihuela (Alacant) and Murcia, with the list of towns and places that they surrendered to him and of the knights that he inherited in those localities as settlers, and in that compendium appears Pedro Queralt, Master of the Order of Santiago. Martín de Viciana confirms that the Queralts of Valencia and Murcia come from the old Catalan family of this surname and mentions Ramón Queralt, Knight of the Conquest, from whom another Ramón Queralt was a descendant, who settled in Massamagrell (València), with thirty other settlers. They were also descendants of the first mentioned Ramón, the brothers Luis, Francisco, Mosén Ramón and Juan, who resided in the Valencian town of Ayora and were Knights of the extreme military arm of the city and Kingdom of Valencia, as proven before the Portante-times of General Governor of that city, on May 24, 1540. In the same proof they showed that they came from the Queralt family of Catalonia

N. Queralt, from the Anoia region (Barcelona), was one of the first settlers in Catí (Castelló) in 1240. Bartomeu Queralt, from the Anoia region, was a resident of Castelló de la Plana in 1398. Bartholí Queralt was a resident of Traiguera ( Castelló) in 1316-1330. Pere de Queralt was a resident of Traiguera (Castelló) in 1379. Bernat Queralt, from the Cuenca de Barberá region (Tarragona), was a resident of Almassora (Castelló) in 1379. Francesc Queralt and Guillem Queralt were residents of the city of Valencia in 1354-1373. Ferrer Queralt and Ramón Queralt, from the Anoia region, were residents of Massamagrell (València) in 1271. Bernat Queralt, Jacme Queralt, Romeu Queralt and Romeu Queralt, from the Anoia region, were residents of Alzira (València) in 1399. Pere de Queralt was a resident of Sant Feliú de Guixols (Girona) in 1360.
