Origin of Urquijo

Surname of Basque origin. The Urquijo surname has spread from the Basque Country to several countries around the world. It is shared by a multitude of families, undoubtedly linked to each other by their primitive and common origin, merging in the same lineage personalities of the official aristocracy as well as many others of that simple nobility of the towns and cities of many parts of the world, adorned with the nobility that honesty and work endows them.

Regarding the cradle of the Urquijo surname, it should be said that, since time immemorial, it was located in the Oquendo Valley, currently belonging to the province of Álava, but that at other times in history it was also ruled under the Señorío de Vizcaya, when Queen Isabel II, by Royal Order of May 13, 1883, added the bordering valleys of Oquendo and Llodio to Vizcaya. Currently there is a strong, and equally very old, settlement of the surname in the Llodio valley (Álava), in which some sources also locate its origin or, at least, its most deeply rooted branches.

Regarding the Marquisate of Urquijo, it is a Spanish noble title that King Amadeo I of Savoy granted by decree of May 13, 1871 to the financier and politician from Alava D. Estanislao Urquijo Landaluce. Of humble origin, Estanislao Urquijo managed to rise economically and socially to the point of initiating one of the most important political-economic sagas in the country during the 19th and 20th centuries, which would continue with his nephew Juan Manuel and his descendants.

Estanislao Urquijo Ussía, third Marquis of Urquijo, obtained in 1918 from King D. Alfonso XIII the dignity of Greatness of Spain.

In 1980 the fifth Marchioness and her husband were murdered, in one of the best-known murder cases in the history of Spain.

The "Bienandanzas é Fortunas" say that the Urquijos come from Martín Pérez de Pobeña, without adding any details. Other authors tell us that Fortud Sánchez de Salcedo, descendant of the Kings of Aragon, sixth Count of Ayala and fifth Lord of Salcedo, was the father of a gentleman who began to be called Ospin and founded the lineage that we are now studying.

The solar tower and armory house of the Ospin de Urquijo family has stood since time immemorial on the hill of San Sebastián de Otaola, in Oquendo, which today belongs to the Ayala City Council and Amurrio district (Álava).

This house was affiliated with the armory palaces that, over time, were built by the Ospin de Urquijo, among others, the so-called Aréchaga, built by the branch of the Counts of Urquijo; that of Unzá, which was built by the parents of the Marquesa de Unzá del Valle; the one known by the name of Zuaza, which belongs to the branch of Don Mariano Luis de Urquijo, of the Order of Malta; that of Ugalde, property of the Urquijo, ancestors of Don Lino de Zuricalday, its current owner; the one called Urtasaustegui, built by the Urquijo family, from whom the Count of Atalayas descends, and the Gordejuela one, by the Urquijo family of the Marqués de Castilleja.

Other branches of Urquijo were called Gordejuela, Zabaila, Duburiz and the Lanuza palace, established in Llodio, which is that of the Marquises of Urquijo.

The Urquijos hold the titles of Count of Urquijo and Marquises of Urquijo, of Amurrio and of Bolarque.
